Final year students document Park Lands

Two media students from the University of Adelaide have each created a short video for the Adelaide Park Lands Association.
Allycia Dobson, 21 (right), and Michael Genrich, 46, (left) filmed, narrated and edited a separate video each, during their respective 2021 internships with APA.
Allycia’s five-minute clip (below) showcases Adelaide’s formal gardens. This includes Veale Gardens (Park 21), Osmond Gardens and Himeji Japanese Garden (Park 18), Rymill Park Rose Garden (Park 14), and Adelaide Botanic Gardens (Park 11).
“I hadn’t been to the Veale Gardens before, which are really beautiful,” Allycia says. “It has a few rock waterfalls and a creek through it. I could spend a long time there. [Overall] I enjoyed just being able to go out in nature and spend time looking around more deeply into the parklands.”
In her final year of studies, Allycia hopes to work as a nature photographer and videographer in future, travelling the globe. “[Environmentalist David Attenborough] definitely inspires me a lot.”
For Michael, the focus of his video (below) is on picnic spots in the Park Lands. This encompasses playgrounds like the Bush Magic Play Park in Park 2, dog parks including the one in Bragg Park/Ngampa Yarta (Park 5), and spots with views like Elder Park in Tarntanya Wama (Park 26).
Michael’s embarking on a career change after two decades in retail management. His favourite discovery during the internship was the wetlands and interpretive trail in G.S. Kingston Park/Wirrarninthi (Park 23.)
“I learned a lot about that park,” Michael says. “I did my own scouting, and on two of the production days, I took my family out to participate with me. So, you see them in the videos as well. It was actually a really good opportunity to spend two days semi-officially exploring all the parklands.”
