Behind the fence in Rymill Park

by Shane Sody

For more than 60 years, the ornamental lake in Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14) has been an iconic symbol of your Adelaide Park Lands.

Picnics, wedding photos, rowing boats, feeding the ducks, Fringe festival events, the stone kiosk, and the shady oriental plane trees on the lake’s island, are just some of the reasons that have drawn tourists and locals alike to the shores of the picturesque lake, since it was first opened in 1961.

In 2024, the lake is getting a makeover. City Council contractor, CATCON is undertaking multi-million dollar maintenance and upgrade to the lake.

This is one of the major components of the City of Adelaide’s Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14) Master Plan.

The Master Plan says renewal of the lake is “to enhance sustainability by introducing a new water source and upgraded filtration system, as well as completing pathway and lighting improvements around the lake.”

The Adelaide Park Lands Association has scheduled a Guided Walk in Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14) for Sunday 26 May 2024.

Bookings for that Guided Walk will open at the end of March.

It’s hoped that the lake renewal project will be completed well before the date of our Guided Walk (works completion is scheduled for April 2024) and that, by then, the area will look something like the artist’s impressions:
