"Cradled in the Canopy" - Kate Marie Lewis
"Cradled in the Canopy" depicts a tender moment between a mother grey-headed flying fox and her baby, a scene symbolic of care, resilience, and the interconnectedness of life.
Since establishing a permanent colony in Adelaide's parklands in 2011, these remarkable creatures have become an awe-inspiring presence. At dusk, nearly 50,000 bats take to the skies, creating a breathtaking display that reminds us of nature's beauty and power. As pollinators and seed dispersers, grey-headed flying foxes play a critical role in sustaining ecosystems.
Through this painting, I hope to share their story and highlight the importance of coexisting with and protecting these remarkable creatures. As they inspire balance in the natural world, may their presence inspire us to nurture the planet and city we share.
