"Island Refuge" - Gail Angela Kellett
It’s a bit of a mystery to who the inspired arborist was who planted this boab tree on the refuge islands which are on some of the smallest parts of the Adelaide Park Lands. Where are they? You’ve probably passed them every time you’ve driven to West Terrace next to our cemetery but not seen them. I love the way they have occupied their space for years. Being an endemic tree of Northern Australia they are extremely hardy and used to all kind of conditions. Its species names are Adansonia Gregorio or Gadawon and Larrgadiy. Its bottled trunk holds water so it can stand harsh conditions like the middle of roads. Historically the Adelaide Park Lands are home to many unusual species of trees. Next time you come to our city have a good look at these beautiful trees and their sheer intriguing beauty will make you wonder what else lives in your Park Lands.
