"This landscape doesn't make sense" - Brenton Drechsler
My practice explores notions of orientation, opacity and finding my bearings in the materiality of paint.
My non-human alter ego has emerged in the form of a green and white stripe which binds my work together, present in each composition.
Stripes can represent a variety of meanings that are often contradictory in nature. In
‘This landscape doesn’t make sense, 2025’ the stripes have become the entire work.
This was a challenge set to me by a friend who, upon reading my Honours exegesis from Adelaide Central School of Art in 2023, felt that I was minimizing myself within each previously made work.
This composition is derived from a source-photograph taken by me, in the Southern Park Lands.
Whilst at the site, I considered the contradiction of the Park Lands as being a place of welcome and open-air enjoyment and a site that is complicated and often under threat by encroaching development.
