State Election 2022 - Question #1

Awareness

We advised each party that your Adelaide Park Lands are unique in the world and have National Heritage status, yet many people, even in Adelaide, seem unaware of their rarity.

We asked: “If elected, what, if anything, should the SA Government do to address this?” Here’s what each party replied:

PartyParty ResponseAPA evaluationScore
Pauline Hanson's One NationThe government has a number of options including sensitive signage giving some information about the history of the Parkland. Free Walking tours with guides may be another way and a competition for primary school age children. There are more than 200 signs in the Park Lands already. A competition is not necessary to promote the Park Lands.3
Real Change SANowhere near enough publicity and exposure has been given to highlight the parklands. They should be included in every tourism dollar spent and other promotion pieces for SA; conducted tours could be arranged to point out points of interest or notable plants and trees; the parklands could be made more user friendly with signposting to notable areas.Good, although many of the things suggested would be potential City Council opportunities rather than State Government.7
Liberal Democratic PartyWe believe Adelaide has many beautiful parklands that many locals and tourists are already aware of. We will allocate infrastructure funding fairly based on taxpayer value. This promises nothing in regard to promotion.1
Animal Justice PartyResources should be dedicated to better marketing of this unique asset. Explaining the features and increasing awareness will make people who live here appreciate the Adelaide Park Lands, and will also draw more tourists into South Australia.Good response.9
GreensThe Government could improve awareness and appreciation of the Adelaide Park Lands through investing in maintenance of open green space, tree planting and revegetation. The Adelaide Recreation Circuit is a project that should also be embraced to showcase the Park Lands. Additionally, inclusion of the Park Lands on the State Heritage List and advocacy for World Heritage Listing would help cement their place as a South Australian icon. Good, although these suggested actions concern specific issues in Park management and protection rather than promotion.7
Liberal PartyThe Marshall Liberal Government has already indicated its support for state heritage listing of the Adelaide Parklands, and consistent with the national heritage listing and the values which have been recognised by the Heritage Council of South Australia, a re-elected Government will support the state heritage listing of the Adelaide Parklands and CBD layout. The Heritage Standards, which are required for state heritage areas under the Planning and Design Code, are already being prepared and the Government looks forward to releasing these for public consultation following the state election. These will provide the community with an opportunity to engage with the state heritage listing of the parklands and CBD layout, promoting the uniqueness and value of the park landsSupport for State Heritage listing, while welcome (and long overdue) falls short of any commitment to promote the Adelaide Park Lands.4
SA LaborEnsuring people from around South Australia, as well as our interstate and international visitors, are aware of our precious icon helps build the case for protecting what we have. This promises nothing in regard to promotion.3
SA BestLate in the 54th Parliament we strongly supported and were instrumental in having legislation passed in the Legislative Council to Heritage List all parklands but because the Government would not allow the House of Assembly to sit, the legislation of course could not pass both houses. We will again strongly support this legislation in the new Parliament. This support is welcome. However it is not relevant to the specific question.4
SA Party (Sustainable Australia)We believe the SA Government should significantly increase education, interaction, and activation around the Adelaide Park Lands. Examples of this could include support for school trips and other community groups to the Park Lands, running and increasing support for community events (similar to Illuminate Adelaide in the Botanic Gardens) to increase awareness and interaction with the parks. These suggestions are welcome but do not grasp the concept of a world-wide tourism icon.6
