State Election 2022 - Question #3
We advised each party that the City Council and others are developing a bid for UNESCO World Heritage recognition of "Adelaide and its Rural Landscapes" (i.e. for the Adelaide Park Lands and the rural settlements of the Mt Lofty Ranges). The City Council has been advised that World Heritage Listing would result in a 20% to 30% increase in international tourism. The bid would require State Government support.
We asked: “If elected, how will you assist in advancing this World Heritage bid?” Here’s what each party replied:
Party | Party Response | APA evaluation | Score |
---|---|---|---|
Pauline Hanson's One Nation | Unsure what we could add beyond interest and advocacy | Advocacy would be welcome although this falls short of a plan | 3 |
Real Change SA | See my answer to 1. If elected I certainly would support such action. | Support would be welcome, although the response does not include a promise of any specific action | 5 |
Liberal Democratic Party | We believe UNESCO listing would be an unnecessary restriction for the parklands and the locals who use it. | Total opposition | -10 |
Animal Justice Party | I would assist in advancing this World Heritage Bid through influencing the allocation of resources towards supporting the bid for UNESCO World Heritage recognition. The economics of doing so would justify spending significant sums on assisting with the bid, due to the increase in international tourism. However, achieving World Heritage Status would have its own intrinsic worth that need not be quantified. | Strong response of support | 8 |
Greens | The Greens are committed to achieving State and World Heritage Listing for the Adelaide Park Lands. If re-elected, I will reintroduce my Private Members Bill to provide for State listing of the Park Lands and continue to lobby the Labor and Liberal parties to make this a priority in the next parliament. Additionally, the Greens will keep pushing the next Government to support the bid for World Heritage Listing. My Greens colleague, Senate candidate Barbara Pocock has also committed to raising World Heritage Listing in the federal parliament, should she be elected. | State Heritage listing is certainly required as a precursor to pursuing World Heritage listing so this response reflects a good understanding of the difficulties involved and includes a realistic plan to achieve it. | 10 |
Liberal Party | The Government will engage with Adelaide City Council during the next term of government in relation to the World Heritage Bid for 'Adelaide and its Rural Landscapes'. | Offering to engage with the City Council is welcome but falls short of an offer of support | 4 |
SA Labor | An elected Labor government will work with the Adelaide City Council to investigate a bid for Adelaide and its surrounds to be recognised with UNESCO World Heritage status. | Offering to engage with the City Council is welcome but falls short of an offer of support | 4 |
SA Best | We will strongly support UNESCO World Heritage listing of Adelaide and its rural landscapes to ensure that our parklands and hills face zones have world standard protection as well as recognition. UNESCO World Heritage Listing would require the strong advocacy of the SA Government and SA Best has shown that it has the courage to pressure and agitate for change that Governments and Oppositions are often reluctant to pursue. | Good strong response | 9 |
SA Party (Sustainable Australia) | SA Party supports the bid for the Adelaide Parklands to be recognised by UNESCO for World Heritage Listing. We would advocate for this in parliament if elected and urge the State Government and South Australian community to support the bid. | This support is welcome but does not include a plan of action to achieve it. | 7 |
