"Ode to the Blue-banded bee" - Kerryn Levy

A$5,070.00

The form and colour pallet of this piece was inspired by the native Blue Banded Bee found in the Adelaide Park Lands, and the bee hotels that help to sustain them.

Coil-built using South Australian terracotta, gold lustre, blue underglaze and fittingly finished with beeswax, this piece is part of a series of sculptures that celebrates the often-hidden parts of the making process.

Usually I will discard the clay props used to support a precarious form as it dries but in this series I have chosen to keep them in place and highlight them using gold lustre, capturing all the wonderful texture and fingerprints left from the quick process of rolling and squeezing the clay into shape.

Finishing them in gold further highlights the juxtaposition of these quickly formed utilitarian objects next to the consistent pattern on the main body that was created by slow, methodical coil-building.
