Come Here Sunday to Save hundreds of trees

The State Government has snubbed an opportunity to explain to you why it wants to destroy hundreds of trees in your Helen Mayo Park (Park 27)

The “Save Helen Mayo Park Picnic Rally” this Sunday at 12 noon is your chance to express a view about this scenic location on the Torrens riverbank:

Should the State Government let these trees live, or should it replace them with a $660 million 15-thousand seat stadium ?

We invited the Premier but his office has told us that not a single Liberal MP - not even the Member for Adelaide, Rachel Sanderson, MP - is available to speak to you.

But other influential Adelaide leaders will be present:

Each speaker will have up to 10 minutes to give you their pitch about the Government's plans for this Park and the broader question of re-zoning 70 hectares of Riverbank Park Lands to permit many future buildings.

All the trees pictured on this page (along with many more) are heading for the chopping block if Premier Steven Marshall gets his way.

We hope you will join us, from 12 noon to 2pm. There will be live music from the "Seratonins" and the Coffee and Crepes van on-site. When you register to attend, there is also an option to get a free coffee!

The event will be COVID safe. We are permitted to have only 150 people on site so you need to register if you haven’t already done so. There will also be a COVID QR code to scan when you arrive.

If you cannot attend (and/or if all the 150 available registrations are booked out) then you can watch the event live-streamed on our Facebook page,

WHERE IS IT? IS THERE PARKING?

To find Helen Mayo Park, simply ask Google Maps for directions.

The Park is located just west of Montefiore Rd, behind the Riverside Rowing Club and Pulteney Grammar School Rowing Club.

It is an easy walk (300 metres) from the City West tram stop on North Terrace. Simply head north on Montefiore Rd, over the railway lines and take the first turn left, towards the rowing clubs.

Parking at the venue is very limited. There are only 19 car parking spaces on the un-named street.

Apart from these 19 spaces, the nearest other car parking is on North Terrace (on-street or in the North Terrace Car Park) about 300 metres from Helen Mayo Park,

Car parking is also available a bit further away:

  • on War Memorial Drive, on the opposite (north) side of the River Torrens, requiring a walk of about 500 metres across the Montefiore Rd bridge over the river to Helen Mayo Park.

  • at the car park for the Par 3 North Adelaide golf course, off War Memorial Drive. This would require a walk of 800 metres across the Torrens Weir and eastwards along the Park Lands trail to Helen Mayo Park.

The closest public transport stop is the City West tram stop on North Terrace (300 metre walk)

From Adelaide Railway Station it is a 700 metre walk along North Terrace and Montefiore Rd.
