Kadaltilla (the Park Lands Authority) has recommended to the City Council that an informal car park off Port Road in Bonython Park / Tulya Wardli (Park 27) should be closed, and the area restored to Park Lands.
This 7,500 square metre site was once used for netball but no netball has been played there since 1997. On some days it can be crowded with as many as 350 cars, although there are no line markings and so sometimes cars are blocked in by others parked around them. The surface is deteriorating and the Council spends up to $20,000 repeatedly patching it up.
The City Council’s “concept plan” for beach volleyball courts, endorsed in May 2021. No funding has yet been allocated for the purpose.
The Council has previously approved the concept of turning most of this site into beach volleyball courts, with associated facilities and extensive new landscaping.
The southern end of this area is the site of APA's 'UnPaving Paradise' pilot re-greening project, with on-ground works set to commence later this year, subject to Council approval of the design.

The Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy aims to discourage the use of Park Lands for car parking especially all-day commuter parking, with an objective to reduce car parking on Park Lands by 5% and to return those car parks to Park Lands.
Car parking at this site is also inconsistent with the Council's Community Land Management Plan for Bonython Park / Tulya Wardli (Park 27).
There are alternative car parks for 'Park 'n' Ride' commuters at the Entertainment centre at Hindmarsh, or in Light Terrace at Thebarton.
Volleyball SA is attempting to source funding for construction of courts on the site - having recently lost the former beach volleyball courts that were on the corner of Pirie Street and Frome Street in the city.
Kadaltilla/ Park Lands Authority decided at its meeting on 30 June 2022 to recommend to the City Council that it “supports Option A to close the informal car park and return of the area to Park Lands until such time as administration commences work on the return of the area to Park Lands or until such time as Volleyball SA develops the site for beach volleyball purposes.”
The City Council will consider this recommendation at its meeting on 12 July.
