Sports buildings balancing act

You’re being urged to have your say on how the City Council can achieve the right balance between encouraging sport on your Park Lands, without losing Open Green Public spaces.

There are dozens of sports buildings already dotted around your Park Lands, and there is an increased demand from women and girls to play sport in your Park Lands.

However, some of the old buildings are not equipped with suitable modern facilities or even female change rooms or toilets. There’s no doubt that some of these decades-old buildings are in need of refurbishment, repair, or replacement.

Just some of the sports buildings dotted about your Adelaide Park Lands.

The City of Adelaide is trying to come up with a policy that will encourage different groups to share any new buildings, so there can be fewer buildings overall, but with each new one equipped with better facilities.

Should any new buildings include a second storey, to minimise footprint? Or should they spread out over a larger single-storey area, with a lower visual impact?

Private schools usually have more money than sporting clubs. Should the private schools be required to share buildings, with other, less-well-resourced groups? Should the City Council contribute some of the funding to ensure that this happens?

A draft policy has been released for comment. https://yoursay.cityofadelaide.com.au/park-lands-community-buildings

You don’t have to read the whole document to have your say. You can simply check some boxes in a single-page “quick poll” instead, if you prefer.

APA will be providing a submission which will, of course, reflect our Objectives that your Park Lands should, as far as possible, be Open, Green Public, and that closed, private buildings be kept to a minimum.
