Focus on the wetlands

If you haven’t yet visited the wetlands at the southern end of Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16) then this autumn is the time to do so.

This coming Sunday, 5 March 2023, we’re holding our biannual Park clean-up day: joining forces with ‘Clean Up Australia’ to offer one of the most beautiful clean-up opportunities in the nation.

From 10am to midday, please join your fellow Park Lands lovers. We’ll supply gloves, and bags for the waste collected.

You might like to bring one of these claw-handles if you have one.

Starting from the corner of East Terrace and South Terrace, next to the Beaumont Road car park we'll spend two hours combing for rubbish in-between and around the wetland lakes.

The 'Clean Up Australia' organisation requires us to register this as a “fundraiser”, but there is no requirement to donate. Please just register your attendance, here:

We’ve chosen this site for our biannual Park Clean-Up Day partly to review recent works at the wetland, by the project designers and builders.

The wetlands were opened to the public in May 2022, and are being monitored by the Brown Hill Keswick Creek Stormwater Project team, who are making improvements throughout autumn, before the team hands over responsibility to the City Council after the first full year of the wetlands’ operation.

Project director Peta Mantzarapis says the team has identified areas of remediation and rework that have resulted from large flow events.”

“These works have commenced on site and are about protecting against damage in future high flow events and include completion of outstanding works to ensure the whole of the site is accessible to visitors.

“You will see a flurry of activity over the next couple of months as these works are delivered.”

The City Council has made the wetlands a dog on-leash area to protect both plants and waterbirds.
