Tram parking in Veale Park

by Shane Sody

Construction work starting later this year, will halt tram line services through Veale Park / Walyu Yarta (Park 21).

The work will see trams “stabled” for months within the Park, and will also feature a temporary bus loading zone alongside the Park.

The “Tram Grade Separation Projects” jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, will eliminate three level crossings, at Marion Road, Morphett Road and Cross Rd, while also upgrading the tram overpass at South Road.

The works are expected to start “in the second half of 2025” and be concluded by late January 2026.

During the construction period, trams will continue to operate within the City. but substitute buses will be operating between South Terrace and Glenelg.

Impact on Veale Park

A temporary works compound, and a tram “stabling” area will be set up, alongside the tram line through Veale Park / Walyu Yarta (Park 21)

The Department of Transport and Infrastructure has advised Kadaltilla / the Park Lands Authority that it considered two other potential locations for “stabling” unused trams during the construction period. Those other two options were in the East End, on North Terrace, and at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre at Hindmarsh.

However the site in your Park Lands was chosen “as the site allows stabling and operations activities to be completed within the existing corridor.”

The project team also will take over the car park, behind “The Pavilion” and will install fences around the car park.

This car park will be fenced “for operational needs” from mid-2025 until early 2026, and will be supplemented with a gate, temporary walkway, and lighting. Pic: Tram Grade Separation Projects Alliance. https://www.tgsp.sa.gov.au/

The Department of Transport and Infrastructure advises that at the completion of the project, the area will be “reinstated to its former condition.”
